Early Morning Blues

Sample lesson preview

“Early Morning Blues” is a classic twelve bar ragtime blues song inspired by Blind Blake’s recording of the same name. The tune uses many of his trademark riffs in the key of C and features melody riffs moves through the chord progression while the bass shifts on and off the beat.  This is a good one to learn the “double thumbing” or “Drag Bass” idea in the bass line that adds the stride piano -like syncopation that defines Blake’s playing.  In this lesson I teach a few variations and ways to create variations. More Blind Blake tunes coming…

Difficulty: Intermediate -ish. You should be comfortable with basic alternation bass picking.
